Shift At Midnight Easter Eggs, Secrets and Lore
Updated 2026-09-03 · Steam Shift At Midnight
The best documented Shift At Midnight easter eggs are Norbert's recurring lemonade stand, the throwable rubber duck that a fan campaigned into the game, the Midnight News articles that quietly match the customer standing at your counter, and the Calendar Killer theory that points at the player. There is no in-game "secrets" menu, so almost every find is a background detail a community editor noticed and wrote down. The community wiki's own Easter Eggs page is still a stub, so what follows is assembled from the individual character, item and mechanic pages instead.
A warning before you scroll: the Calendar Killer and ending sections below touch on story details. Everything here is community-documented unless it is tied to a dated developer patch note.
Norbert, Dilbert and the lemonade stand
The clearest running gag in the game is Norbert. According to the community wiki, Norbert first turns up as an ordinary customer who scans your items and calls you a handsome customer, then breaks into a villain laugh during every verification check. Shoot him and he yelps rather than dies.
He comes back on the fourth shift running a lemonade stand, opens by pointing out that you shot him last time and says it is fine, then promises his lemonade "won't put you to sleep". The wiki notes his gallery includes an image labelled as poisonous lemonade. On the sixth shift he is reduced to a single line asking whether he may park there.
The naming trivia sits on a different page. Dilbert Hickman is a separate, overweight power plant operator customer, and the community wiki records that some of Dilbert's game files carry the name "Norbert" instead. Two characters, one filename. That mix-up is a large part of why players search for Norbert at all; the details are collected on norbert.
The rubber duck and the duck pet
The rubber duck is a pickup found in various spots around the gas station. It takes an inventory slot, and thrown it bounces unpredictably and damages whatever it hits.
Its origin is the most human easter egg in the game. Per the community wiki, the duck was added after a community member posted a picture of a duck every day for 16 days straight asking for one. The pets system then references the item back: the wiki's Pets page states the duck pet is a nod to the rubber duck, sitting alongside the puppy, husky and kitty you pick in the opening cutscene. More on the cosmetics side is on pets-and-hats.
Midnight News articles that match your customers
Midnight News is a notice you sometimes receive in story and endless mode. The community wiki's key observation is that the randomised articles are not decoration: each one is paired with a specific customer.
| Article | Linked customer | Status on the wiki |
|---|---|---|
| Joe's Diner burns down | Brandon Keller | Confirmed pairing |
| Midnight Library closed | Emilia Carter | Confirmed pairing |
| West Bridge shut down | Grace Harper | Confirmed pairing |
| East power outage | Ethan Voss | Confirmed pairing |
| Wanted criminal notice | Raymond Kessler | Listed as needing fact-checking |
| A death by drowning | David Kennedy (Stacy Kennedy) | Listed as needing fact-checking |
| A missing person | Maya Davila (Walter Davila) | Listed as needing fact-checking |
The last three are flagged by the editors themselves as unverified, so treat them as leads rather than facts. Worth noting: Brandon Keller, Emilia Carter and Grace Harper are all logged on the wiki as guaranteed doppelgangers, which makes the news slip a genuine tell. Cross-reference them on customers and doppelgangers.
Joe's Diner Newsletter and the people who never show up
Joe's Diner is a restaurant in the game's world that you never visit. It exists through its newsletter, a local sheet whose boards appear in the gallery, plus a screen showing the diner burnt down.
Brandon Keller is the thread running through it. The community wiki records a discrepancy worth hunting for: the N.E.T. database lists his occupation as waiter, while the diner's own promotional newsletters describe him as a cook. His background is also the game's clearest doppelganger origin story, a charity run for S.H.A.P.E. followed by an exhausted return home with unexplained symptoms and a person who goes back to work as though nothing happened.
Jordan Cat is the other diner employee, known only from an official missing poster. The wiki gives his disappearance date as May 23 and lists him as a co-worker of Brandon's with no confirmed relationship beyond that.
The Calendar Killer theory
The Calendar Killer is only ever mentioned, never seen. The community wiki's account: a killer who goes on a spree once a month, usually striking on the 8th and killing eight people, and the same page adds that the killer has supposedly struck every night across the previous six months. A news article warns citizens to stay indoors shortly before each attack.
Two details make it the most-repeated fan theory in the game. In December there is no attack, which the townspeople find strange. And exactly eight customers come through the store on the eighth shift. If you kill none of them, the game reports that the Calendar Killer did not attack that month either. The theory that the player character is the Calendar Killer is community speculation built on those two coincidences, not a developer statement. It is unpacked further on calendar-killer.
Background lore and hidden characters
These are the details the community wiki has pinned down that never appear in normal play.
| Detail | What the wiki says |
|---|---|
| Andre | Named as the gas station worker who held the job before the player |
| Charles Wigglebottom | Born 1918, unable to leave his house, exists only as a N.E.T. database page; his service dog Tofu comes to the store instead |
| Herbert | A doppelganger imitating a bear, whose defining difference is that he is a talking bear |
| Bill Dawson | Former mayor, Clyde Dawson's father, listed as dying in 1948; an unfinished wiki theory links him to The Dentist via matching haircuts and dates |
| The Dentist | A serial killer who died 45 years before the game, resurfacing via a N.E.T. broadcast warning |
| N.E.T. silence | Ryan Holt, Colin Shirley and Vanessa McCree all work for N.E.T. yet say nothing about one another when you interrogate them on each other's database entries; the wiki's single noted exception is Ryan reacting to the file of Ramirez Queens, a fourth and already dead N.E.T. name |
| Delgado family | Ramona, Tommy and Catherine Delgado are likely related; Ramona's doppelganger complains about Tommy's unemployment while Tommy has nothing to say about her |
| Kessler surname | Bartholomew Kessler shares a surname with Raymond Kessler but has no unique interrogation response for him |
| Dmitri Markou | Listed as the only customer whose species was temporarily changed to a guaranteed doppelganger |
The one-sided interrogation responses are the most useful of these in play, because they tell you which database cross-references are worth spending shift time on. See how-to-spot-doppelgangers for the checks themselves.
Design references players have spotted
Two are worth naming, both community readings rather than confirmed nods. Editors read the elongated doppelganger as a likely nod to the stretched staff of SCP-3008. And the Freed achievement's name has editors arguing the Demented does not assist the Entity willingly, but is forced to. Neither is developer-confirmed. The creatures themselves are catalogued on monsters.
Two in-world explanations also read like easter eggs. The wiki says the reason the Arsenal opens late during a Blood Moon Hunt is that rain interfered with its mechanisms. And the True Ending page notes the player never tells Clyde about the encounter with The Dentist's Doppelganger, which the endings page covers properly.
What is not documented yet
Two obvious gaps. The community wiki's Timeline page currently has no timeline on it at all, so there is no ordered history of Midnight Town to work from. And the Easter Eggs page itself is a stub with a single line saying secrets referencing different things can be found around the map, without listing any. If you are hunting for map-based visual references, that hunt has not been written up by anyone yet.
The developer patch notes through the 1 September 2026 update, which added 30 new customers, a chainsaw and endless mode security cameras, contain no easter egg callouts, so no secrets on this page come from official sources beyond the items and mechanics those notes introduce. Full history is on patch-notes.
Sources and last check
Checked 3 September 2026. Almost everything on this page comes from the Shift At Midnight community wiki on Fandom: the Easter Eggs stub, the Midnight News page for the article-to-customer pairings, the Calendar Killer page for the monthly pattern and the player theory, the Rubber Duck page for the 16-day community campaign, the Dilbert Hickman and Norbert pages for the filename mix-up and the lemonade stand, plus the Pets, Hunt, Midnight Mart, Joe's Diner, Brandon Keller, Jordan Cat, Bill Dawson, Herbert, Charles Wigglebottom, N.E.T., True Ending and Timeline pages. All of that is community-written and unofficial, and several items above are flagged by the editors themselves as unverified or as fan theory. The only official source used is the developer's Steam announcement of 1 September 2026, cited for what that update added and for the absence of any developer easter egg notes.
