Norbert in Shift At Midnight: Tells, Lemonade and Dilbert

Updated 2026-09-03 · Steam Shift At Midnight

Norbert in Shift At Midnight is a recurring oddball who shows up on three different nights and answers every single verification prompt with the same cackle. According to the community wiki he is a customer on shift 2, then returns on shift 4 running a lemonade stand and on shift 6 asking about parking, neither time as a customer you serve at the register. He is also the reason two names get confused: a completely separate customer, Dilbert Hickman, has game files labelled "Norbert", so searches for one keep landing on the other.

Nothing about Norbert has been confirmed in the developer's Steam patch notes. Every detail below comes from the community Fandom wiki, checked on 3 September 2026, and several of his wiki fields are still blank.

Who Norbert is

The community wiki's Norbert entry is thin on purpose: it is tagged as a stub. It lists him as male and gives no occupation, no date of birth and no status, which is unusual, because most customer entries carry all three. His gallery contains an N.E.T. identification image, a lemonade stand shot, a picture captioned as his poisonous lemonade, and a model texture file whose name describes a very short gnome wizard. His infobox photo is filed under a different name again, "Pubert profile.png".

Put together, that is a character built as a gag rather than a normal shopper. He has no listed doppelganger page, which matters if you are trying to work out whether he is a threat or set dressing.

Every shift Norbert appears on

The Shifts page on the community wiki lists notable characters for each of the 13 nights of story mode. Norbert is named on three of them, and only one of those is a register encounter.

ShiftQuotaHow Norbert appearsNotes from the community wiki
Shift 2$35CustomerListed alongside Roger Conroy, Ryan Holt and a Midnight News dependent customer. This is the shift that introduces randomised customers
Shift 4$45Marked "Non-Customer"The shift that opens up the gas station part of the Midnight Mart; his lemonade stand images belong here
Shift 6$55Marked "not as a customer"One line of dialogue, asking whether he can park

Because shift 2 is the first night with randomised customers, Norbert is not guaranteed on every playthrough of that shift. The wiki does not state the odds, so treat him as possible rather than scheduled.

Norbert's dialogue and the giveaway

Standard checkout in this game runs in two stages: you scan the ID, then you verify physical details and interrogate the person against their N.E.T. database record. The community wiki describes the verification prompts as head, clothes, limbs and movements, with interrogation topics such as photo, date of birth, status and occupation.

Norbert breaks the pattern completely. His script gives one identical response to all four verification prompts.

PromptRecorded reply
Greeting at the counterOffers you a bag for the items
Head"Muahaha!"
Clothes"Muahaha!"
Limbs"Muahaha!"
Movements"Muahaha!"
Getting shot"Yeowch!"

His first-appearance script is stranger still: the community wiki writes it out as a full checkout exchange in which Norbert delivers the clerk's half of the conversation, offering to scan the items himself and calling the player a handsome customer.

The general rule the wiki gives for customers is that a strange or wrong answer usually means a doppelganger, and that a confirmed ganger has to be shot twice unless you hit the head, which kills instantly. Norbert answers strangely every time and yet has no doppelganger entry, so applying the normal rule to him is exactly the trap. The wiki does not say what happens if you shoot him on shift 2, and it does not say he is a guaranteed human either. Both outcomes are unconfirmed.

The lemonade stand on shift 4

On shift 4 Norbert reappears outside as a vendor. His script for that night opens by cheerfully acknowledging that you shot him last time and saying it is fine, then offers lemonade with a reassurance that it will not "put you to sleep". The image file for the drink is captioned as poisonous lemonade on the community wiki, so the reassurance is the joke.

There is no documented mechanic attached to drinking it. Whether the lemonade damages the player, does nothing, or is purely a scene has not been written up. Do not expect a stat effect until someone confirms one.

Norbert versus Dilbert Hickman

This is the other reason the name is searched so often. Dilbert Hickman is a separate, fully documented customer whose community wiki page notes that some of his game files carry the name "Norbert" instead. His photo asset is literally filed as "Norbert Hickman profile.png". A leftover development name, not two characters.

FieldDilbert Hickman's record
GenderMale
OccupationPower plant operator
Date of birthJune 14, 1939
StatusAlive
SpeciesHuman
Listed physical detailOverweight
Photo asset nameNorbert Hickman profile.png

Worth flagging for anyone interrogating him: his recorded answer to the date-of-birth question states his age as 54, while his database entry gives a 1939 birth year. The community wiki has no timeline page filled in and never states what year the game is set in, so there is no way to say from the sources whether that is a deliberate contradiction you can catch or simply consistent with the in-game date. Treat it as unresolved rather than as a confirmed tell. His verification answers are otherwise a repeated murmur, with the oil-stain excuse used for both clothes and limbs, which fits a power plant job.

Dilbert has no doppelganger page on the community wiki either, so a Dilbert ganger is not documented.

Should you shoot Norbert?

There is no sourced answer, and anyone telling you there is one is guessing. What the sources do support:

  • His verification answers are non-answers, which under the game's normal logic reads as suspicious.
  • He has no doppelganger entry, unlike the roughly three dozen customers who do have one. See doppelgangers for that list.
  • He returns on later shifts after being shot, which no ordinary customer does.
  • Neither the store page nor any patch note names him.

If you are working through the standard checks rather than guessing, the routine is covered on how to spot doppelgangers, and the model's odd asset names sit alongside the game's other easter eggs.

What the patch notes do and do not cover

The developer's announcements have added a lot of customers since launch: 15 on 20 August 2026 and 30 more on 1 September 2026, both to story mode and endless mode. Neither announcement names individual customers, so there is no official confirmation of when Norbert was added or whether he was changed. The 1 September update also added a chainsaw as a purchasable melee weapon and security cameras in endless mode, but nothing customer-specific by name.

Sources and last check

Checked 3 September 2026. Norbert's character details, dialogue, shift appearances, gallery file names and the Dilbert Hickman naming note all come from the community Fandom wiki pages for Norbert, Norbert/Script, Dilbert Hickman, Shifts, Customers and Doppelgangers. Those pages are community-written, several are marked as stubs, and none of them is official. The customer counts added on 20 August and 1 September 2026, plus the chainsaw and security camera additions, come from the developer's own Steam announcements, which are authoritative. Where the two disagree, the patch notes win, but on Norbert specifically the patch notes are silent. Anything described above as not documented or unconfirmed is genuinely absent from every source, not omitted for length.
