Shift At Midnight Multiplayer: Players, Lobbies & Crossplay
Updated 2026-09-03 · Steam Shift At Midnight
Shift At Midnight: how many players? The Steam store page still calls it an online co-op detective horror for up to 3 players, and that is the size the whole game is balanced around. Since the day-one patch on 23 July 2026 you can also pick a maximum of 6 in the lobby-creation screen, but developer Bun Muen attached a warning to that option rather than a recommendation. Solo play is supported too, so the real answer is one to three normally, up to six if you accept the chaos.
How many players can play Shift At Midnight
| Setup | Player count | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | 1 | Store page lists Single-player; launch post says "play solo" |
| Designed co-op | Up to 3 | Steam store description, unchanged as of 3 September 2026 |
| Lobby cap after the 23 July patch | Up to 6 selectable | Patch notes, 23 July 2026 |
| Community mods | 8 to 99 depending on the mod | Thunderstore mod pages, not official |
The launch announcement on 22 July phrased it as playing solo or with up to two extra friends, which is the same three-seat lobby by another name. The 6-player option arrived one day later, and the patch notes are unusually blunt about it: the developer says the game is designed and has always been marketed around a maximum of three, and that anything above that is outside the intended design, likely to get too chaotic, and not recommended for a first playthrough.
Practically, that means three players for a first run through the 13 story shifts, and six only once everybody already knows the customer-checking routine from the beginner guide. One nice co-op perk, per the community wiki: hats won from the break-room spinner unlock for everyone in the lobby, not just the spinner.
Is Shift At Midnight crossplay?
This is the part where the sources are narrower than most players expect, so here is exactly what has been said and by whom.
| Question | Status as of 3 September 2026 |
|---|---|
| Steam players with Steam players | Yes |
| Xbox and Xbox PC Game Pass together | Crossplay confirmed in the pre-launch roadmap |
| Steam players with Xbox or Game Pass players | Not supported; the roadmap says Steam players can only play with other Steam players |
| PlayStation, Switch, mobile | Not mentioned in any source; no release confirmed |
| Mac or Linux | The Steam store lists Windows only |
The crossplay statement comes from the developer's official release-date announcement on 10 July 2026, ahead of launch. Nothing in the patch notes from 22 July to 1 September changes it, so treat "Steam talks to Steam, Xbox talks to Game Pass" as the current position rather than a permanent one. The full platform breakdown lives on the crossplay page.
Lobbies, the server browser and how to join friends
Lobbies are created by a host, who picks the maximum player count on the creation screen before the shift starts. Everyone else joins that lobby; there is no dedicated-server hosting in the vanilla game.
On the server browser, the sources genuinely disagree in tone. The pre-launch roadmap promised a Steam-only public server browser either at launch or shortly after. According to the community wiki, a page titled Server Browser instead describes a mod of that name, credited to a community member called corpsepuppie, that lets you search for specific servers. Meanwhile, several Thunderstore mod descriptions refer to patching "server-browser full checks" and to friends joining through Steam or an in-game lobby selector, which implies a public listing does exist in the retail build. Because no patch note ever announced the browser by name, the honest answer is that a public lobby list is present, but its exact official status is not confirmed yet.
Two networking details worth knowing, both reported by mod authors rather than the developer: the game runs its multiplayer on Photon Fusion alongside Steam matchmaking, and the Xbox session template is fixed at three members, which is why Xbox lobby-size mods behave differently from Steam ones.
Voice chat and why noise matters
Proximity chat is part of the pitch, not a bonus feature. The developer's own bundle copy says multiplayer is where the game thrives and that proximity chat enhances the experience, and the launch post lists proximity chat next to doppelganger detective work and gambling.
It is also a survival mechanic. According to the community wiki, the Entity is blind and hunts using both in-game sounds and voice-chat sounds, so a team that panics loudly on mic for too long will pull it straight to their hiding spot. Screaming is thematically correct and tactically terrible.
The 20 August patch added individual volume sliders for each player, so a teammate with a hot microphone can now be turned down inside the vanilla settings. That same update added Steam cloud saves.
Cannot join a lobby? The official fix
On launch day the developer posted a dedicated announcement for players who could not join lobbies at all. The instructions were to right-click Shift At Midnight in the Steam library, open Properties, go to Game Versions and Betas, enter the access code networkissues, and opt into the "network-issues-patch" branch. Crucially, everyone in the group has to do it; a mixed party will still fail. The post described this as a stopgap while a proper fix was made for the main build.
| Symptom | What the sources say |
|---|---|
| Friends cannot join at all, launch window | Opt every player into the network-issues-patch beta branch (official announcement, 22 July 2026) |
| Could not create joinable lobbies in Russia | Fixed in the 23 July patch |
| Frozen cursor and unresponsive buttons after a crash | Named as the target of the next minor patch on 23 July; no later note confirms the fix |
| Lobby feels chaotic at 6 players | Expected: the developer says the design target is 3 |
Because that beta branch was a launch-week workaround, try the current retail build first. If joining still fails, the branch instructions are still the only official remedy published so far.
Playing with more than 6 players
Community mods on Thunderstore raise the cap well past the official six, with configurable limits advertised anywhere from 8 up to 99, and in one case a theoretical Steam ceiling far higher. Most of them are host-only, so friends can join an oversized lobby without installing anything, though at least one mod author notes testing is ongoing on that point. There is also a LAN and VPN connection mod, and that one does require both sides to install it and to run matching game versions.
Mod authors report their own limits honestly: one warns that interactable objects use a fixed 10-slot networked array, so the eleventh player onward may be unable to interact with things, and another says lobbies above six often bring lag, desync and unstable voice chat. None of this is supported by the developer, and cheat or host-menu mods are not covered here. The full list and install steps are on the mods page, and the change history behind every number above is on the patch notes page.
Sources and last check
Checked 3 September 2026. Player counts, platform support and the co-op categories come from the official Steam store page for Shift At Midnight. The 6-player lobby option, the Russia lobby-creation fix and the individual volume sliders come from the developer's own patch notes on Steam (23 July and 20 August 2026), and the beta-branch join fix from the "CAN'T JOIN A LOBBY?" announcement of 22 July 2026. The crossplay position between Steam, Xbox and Xbox PC Game Pass comes from the official release-date announcement of 10 July 2026 and has not been restated since.
The Entity's use of voice-chat noise, the hat unlocks shared across a lobby and the Server Browser description are from the community-written Fandom wiki, not from the developer. Every claim about lobby sizes above six, Photon Fusion, the fixed Xbox session size and mod stability comes from Thunderstore mod pages written by their authors and is unofficial and untested by Bun Muen or Kwalee.
