How to Spot a Doppelganger in Shift At Midnight: Tells
Updated 2026-09-03 · Steam Shift At Midnight
The short answer on how to tell doppelganger Shift At Midnight customers from real ones: run the same three checks on everyone, every time. Scan the ID, pull the person up in the N.E.T. database and question them field by field, then look at the body in front of you and compare it to the record. A doppelganger fails on a contradiction, not on a vibe: the record says widow and the customer mentions a husband, the record says plumber and the customer says flight attendant, the record says deceased and the customer is standing at your register. Later shifts hand you two more tools, the Anomaly Lens and the Emotiscope, that catch the ones whose story is airtight.
The official store text frames it the same way: examine the ID, cross-check details on the computer, watch behaviour, and be sure before you let anyone walk out. Everything below about individual customers comes from the community wiki, which is fan-maintained and incomplete, so treat named tells as strong leads rather than a guaranteed list.
The register routine, step by step
According to the community wiki's Customers page, a customer picks items off the shelves, comes to the register, and you bag the items, scan their ID, and question them before finalising the transaction. Nothing forces you to rush that middle part. Scanning the ID is what pulls the N.E.T. record onto the computer, so read the whole record before you say a word, then work through it: every database line, then the four Verify prompts about their body, then the relatives the record names, then your tools once they unlock.
Check 1: the N.E.T. database fields
N.E.T., the Non-human Eradication Taskforce, issues the ID cards and maintains the database, per the community wiki. Every record carries the same fields, and each one is a question you can ask.
| Database field | What a human does | What a doppelganger may do |
|---|---|---|
| Photo | Explains or shrugs off an old picture | Admits the ID is fake, or the photo is somebody else entirely |
| Date of birth | States the date on the card | Deflects, or gives a date that does not match |
| Status (alive or deceased) | Confirms it casually | Contradicts a record that lists them as dead |
| Occupation | Matches the record | Names a completely different job |
| Physical descriptors | Matches the note on file | Missing the noted feature, or has the wrong version of it |
| Relatives and associates | Answers consistently | Gets a name, status or cause of death wrong |
The physical descriptors are the underrated ones. Records carry lines like bald, often wears glasses, very short hair, dark circles under the eyes, dyed dark red hair, burn scars on one arm, or a missing hand. If the note is on file and the feature is not on the customer, that is your contradiction.
Relatives are the deepest trap. The community wiki's script pages show the pattern clearly: one impostor is asked about a husband's status, insists he is home watching TV, then abruptly reverses and admits he is dead once you press the cause-of-death line. Another claims to be shopping for a sister who turns out to be deceased in the system.
Check 2: the Verify options
Separate from the database, you can question the customer about their own body and behaviour. The community wiki's script pages list four prompts, and they are worth using even when the record looks clean.
| Verify prompt | What you are looking for |
|---|---|
| Head | Hair, face and eyes that do not match the photo, or a story that does not hold up |
| Clothes | Uniforms, name tags and outfits that contradict the stated job |
| Limbs | Extra or missing limbs, wrong scars, wrong tattoos, injuries the record does not mention |
| Movements | Levitating, contorting, or moving in ways a person cannot |
Known tells by customer
These come from the community wiki's doppelganger pages. It documents roughly 33 doppelganger entries, and the wiki's own totals for both humans and doppelgangers are still blank, so this is a partial list.
| Customer impersonated | The tell | Caught by |
|---|---|---|
| Agnes Wells | The record is a three-year-old; an elderly woman turns up | Database photo and birth date |
| Nathan Calloway | The real Nathan is deceased, and the ID photo is actually Tommy Delgado's | Database status and photo |
| Rudnick Wex | The real Rudnick is deceased, and the body contorts unnaturally | Database status, Movements |
| Judith Calhoun | Mentions a husband at home; the record lists her as a widow | Relatives |
| Tommy Delgado | Shopping for his sister Catherine, who is dead in the system | Relatives |
| Maya Davila | Says she is back from a date with her husband, who is missing | Relatives |
| Martha Collins | Gets her own children's names wrong | Relatives |
| Julietta Granger | Says flight attendant; the record says plumber | Occupation |
| Keith Hargreaves | Believes he is a bus driver | Occupation |
| Corey Bishop | The lanyard photo is Danielle Bennett | Clothes |
| Andal Khan | Name tag is misspelled, ADNAL instead of ANDAL | Clothes |
| Dylan Pike | Wears long trousers; the real Dylan always wears shorts, and he brushes the question off | Clothes |
| Jade Sinclair | Looks nothing like her database photo | Database photo |
| Youssef Morad | Completely different hair | Head |
| Anita Varma | Right hand cut off and bleeding | Limbs |
| Tomas Vega | Missing the burn scar on his right wrist | Limbs |
| Mia Cannon | Tattoo pattern is wrong | Limbs |
| Odessa Moyo | Tattoo sits on the wrist instead of the shoulder | Limbs |
| Travis Dunn | Has no lisp, unlike the real Travis | Speech |
| Barry Aoki | Far larger than he should be, and claims to have eaten magic beans | Movements and dialogue |
| Herbert | A talking bear | Everything |
| Brandon Keller | Says he clocked off at Joe's Diner the night it burned down | Midnight News |
| Emilia Carter | Says she was studying at the library the day it closed | Midnight News |
| Amelia Kramer | Invisible through the Anomaly Lens | Anomaly Lens |
| Aria Romero | Face distorts through the lens | Anomaly Lens |
| Kevin Larson | Dances in the lens | Anomaly Lens |
| Ren Takahashi | Appears as a cat in the lens | Anomaly Lens |
| Wade Callahan | Appears as a flesh parasite in the lens | Anomaly Lens |
| Vivien Marrow | Jumpscares you through the lens | Anomaly Lens |
| Net Pongsak | Always a doppelganger; levitates and keeps facing the lens | Anomaly Lens |
| Ramona Delgado | The Emotiscope reports a craving for human flesh | Emotiscope |
Not every entry has a documented tell. Cara Hastings' and Howard Elkins' doppelganger pages both leave the field empty, so assume unlisted impostors exist and keep running the full routine. The full roster lives on doppelgangers, and the human side is on customers.
Check 3: the Anomaly Lens and the Emotiscope
The community wiki's Shifts table puts the Anomaly Lens at shift 9 and the Emotiscope at shift 11, so for the first eight nights you are working from the ID, the database and your eyes alone.
The Anomaly Lens shows what a customer really is. The wiki's examples include one impostor that turns into a cat, one that reads as a flesh parasite, one that dances, one that levitates while tracking the camera, one whose face distorts, one that jumpscares you, and one that does not register in the lens at all. That last case matters: absence is a result too.
The Emotiscope, written as EmotiScanner in some records, reports an emotional state in the form "This person is feeling" plus one or more emotions. Most readings are mundane and humans often talk back at them, so one odd emotion is not proof; one documented case is blunt enough to act on, reporting a craving for human flesh. Neither device has its own wiki page yet, so unlock costs and per-customer readings are not confirmed.
Midnight News: the free advance warning
The notice board in the break room posts a Midnight News article, and the community wiki maps several of them directly onto a customer who is then guaranteed to appear as a doppelganger that shift. Read the board before your first customer.
| Article | Customer to expect |
|---|---|
| Joe's Diner burns down | Brandon Keller |
| Midnight Library closed | Emilia Carter |
| West Bridge shut down | Grace Harper |
| East power outage | Ethan Voss |
The wiki flags three further pairings as unverified and needing fact-checking: a wanted criminal article with Raymond Kessler, Stacy Kennedy's death with David Kennedy, and Walter Davila's disappearance with Maya Davila. Treat those as leads, not rules. Shift-by-shift detail is on shifts.
What happens if you get it wrong
Let one through and it does not just vanish. Per the store description, a missed doppelganger comes back later in the shift to kill you and your friends, and the community wiki's Entity page adds that an uncaught doppelganger goes and alerts the Entity, which then arrives at the end of your shift. At that point the game turns into boarding up doors, laying traps and hiding. See entity and monsters.
Going the other way, shooting a human is also a mistake, and the wiki notes that a customer who is shot runs before dying unless you land a headshot, which kills immediately. There is a separate category of nuisance customer, the Troublemaker, that starts appearing around shift 10; they are humans who damage your store rating, and the wiki says killing one costs you revenue. Toilet paper or a shot to the foot moves them along instead. Norbert is his own oddity and gets covered on norbert.
Quick checklist
- Read the notice board first; a Midnight News article can name your doppelganger before it walks in.
- Scan every ID, even for a customer you already served this run.
- Ask about all database fields, not just the interesting ones.
- Compare the physical descriptor notes against the actual body.
- Always look up relatives; status and cause of death are the most common slips.
- Use all four Verify prompts, not only the one that looks off.
- Once unlocked, sweep with the Anomaly Lens and read the Emotiscope before finalising.
- No contradiction found does not mean human. It means you have not found it yet.
The roster also keeps growing. The 20 August 2026 update added 15 customers and the 1 September 2026 update added 30 more to Story and Endless Mode, so the wiki lags the live game, and the developer said before launch that Endless Mode would keep gaining new detection methods. See endless-mode.
Sources and last check
Checked 3 September 2026. The register routine, the four Verify prompts, the N.E.T. database fields, every named per-customer tell, the Midnight News pairings, the shift 9 Anomaly Lens and shift 11 Emotiscope unlocks, the Troublemaker rules and the Entity consequence all come from the Shift At Midnight community wiki pages for Doppelgangers, Customers, Shifts, Entity, N.E.T., Troublemaker, Midnight News and the individual customer and doppelganger entries. Those pages are fan-written, several are marked as stubs, and the wiki's own counts of humans and doppelgangers are still blank, so treat all of it as community-reported and unofficial. The framing of the checks, the warning that a missed doppelganger returns to kill you, and the 3-player figure come from the official Steam store page. The 15-customer and 30-customer additions come from the developer's Steam announcements dated 20 August 2026 and 1 September 2026, which are authoritative and take priority over the wiki where the two disagree. No Steam Community guides were available for this page, so nothing here is player-guide-tested.
