Shift At Midnight Endings: All 4 and How to Get Each One
Updated 2026-09-03 · Steam Shift At Midnight
Spoiler warning: this page describes the last shifts of Story Mode and how each finale plays out.
How many Shift At Midnight endings are there? There are four endings, and the community wiki lists all four on its Endings page. Only one of them is called the True Ending, and it needs two things at once: your pet has to survive its illness, and Clyde Dawson has to survive shift 13. Everything else is a variation of losing one of them, or of running out of money for the pet's treatment entirely.
Story Mode is only 13 shifts long, so an ending is never far away. Developer Bun Muen described it before launch as 13 nights with a handful of endings, and the community wiki has since pinned that number at four. Below is what each ending requires, which achievement it pays out, and what is still blank on the wiki.
All four endings at a glance
According to the community wiki, the four endings are separated by two survivors: your pet, and Clyde Dawson, the sheriff who walks you through your first shift. The wiki's Endings page shows four ending screens, three with placeholder captions, so the names below come from the matching achievement text rather than in-game titles.
| Ending | Pet | Clyde | Achievement | Documented on the wiki |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| True Ending | Alive | Alive | True Ending | Fully written up |
| Grave Decision | Alive | Dead | Grave Decision | Achievement text only |
| Empty Home | Dead | Alive | Empty Home | Achievement text only |
| Unnamed reset ending | Dead | Not stated | None listed | Ending screen text only |
Treat every row below the first as unofficial. Grave Decision and Empty Home are the community's reading of the achievement list rather than confirmed ending names, and both of those achievement pages are stubs with no requirements written out. The fourth ending has no name at all in any source here: the wiki reproduces its on-screen text but never titles it, and no achievement is attached to it, so it is called the reset ending on this page purely for reference.
True Ending: what it actually requires
This is the only ending with a full page on the community wiki, and the one the game treats as canon. Two conditions have to line up.
- Do not call Clyde after shift 12. The community wiki's requirement is worded as a choice not to call him once the twelfth shift is finished. It also lists Clyde as alive through nights 1 to 12 and deceased on night 13 only as a determinant outcome. Whether placing the call is itself what endangers him, or whether the two facts are simply linked by the ending you land on, is not confirmed yet by any source here.
- Bank 250 dollars of shared revenue and pay for the pet's surgery. The treatment is the reason the player character took the job at all: in the prologue the pet follows him home from the shelter, then falls ill, and the Midnight Mart shift exists to cover the medication.
Get both right and the finale is quiet rather than violent. The wiki describes the player at home with the pet after the last shift, Clyde arriving with beers, the two of them on the couch in front of the TV, and the player never mentioning the encounter with the Dentist's doppelganger.
The money half used to be worse: the August 20, 2026 update listed equalized product prices so that reaching the True Ending is less dependent on random chance. Nothing in the patch notes changes the 250 dollar figure itself, so that number is community-sourced and worth re-checking after content updates.
The two sacrifice endings
The achievement list is the clearest evidence for the two middle endings, because each one is written as a trade:
- Grave Decision — the pet pulls through, and Clyde is the one who does not.
- Empty Home — Clyde walks away from shift 13, and the pet is the one you lose.
Who kills Clyde is covered elsewhere on the community wiki: its page for the Dentist's doppelganger, the tall figure stalking the mart through Story Mode, lists Clyde among that entity's known victims as a determinant death, alongside Ryan Holt on shift 4, Vanessa McCree on shift 9, and a bathroom victim on shift 12.
The wiki calls Empty Home the rarest achievement in the game and True Ending one of the rarest. That is a community claim, not a Steam statistic.
The reset ending
The fourth screen on the Endings page is the only one with its text written out, and it is a failure state rather than a choice: the lines say you could no longer keep up with the pet's medication payments, that you buried it, and that you saw no reason to continue, closing with "your progress has been reset."
This is the ending you get by doing nothing special. Miss the money and the run ends itself. The community wiki attaches no achievement to it and does not say which shift it can fire on, so treat the trigger as not confirmed yet.
Which achievements come from endings
Shift At Midnight has 10 achievements on Steam, and three of them are tied to endings. How many Story Mode runs a full completion actually takes is not stated in any source here.
| Achievement | What the wiki says unlocks it | Ending-locked |
|---|---|---|
| True Ending | Keep both your pet and Clyde alive | Yes |
| Grave Decision | Sacrifice Clyde so the pet survives | Yes |
| Empty Home | Sacrifice the pet so Clyde survives | Yes |
| First Blood | Kill your first customer | No |
| Still Breathing | Survive your first Hunt | No |
| Silenced | Kill a Shrieking Doll | No |
| Freed | Kill a Demented | No |
| Relentless | Finish a Hunt within 30 seconds | No |
| Last Performance | Kill a Marionette | No |
| Locked And Loaded | Buy every melee weapon and fill the arsenal | No |
One live correction from the patch notes: the September 1, 2026 update added a Chainsaw as a purchasable melee weapon and made it required for Locked And Loaded. Any completion checklist written before that date is out of date. See achievements for the full unlock routes, and monsters for the Shrieking Doll, Demented, and Marionette kills that three of them need.
Surviving long enough to reach an ending
None of this matters if the shift kills you first. The community wiki's Hunt page covers the mechanic that ends most runs early: let one doppelganger through and it alerts the Entity, which arrives once the last customer is checked out. A Blood Moon triggers a Hunt however clean your night was, and then the weapons arsenal stays shut until the Entity is below half health.
The practical route to any deliberate ending is the boring one: verify every customer, keep Hunts off your back, and bank the revenue. Doppelgangers and how to spot doppelgangers cover the checks themselves, and shifts lists what each of the 13 nights introduces, including the shift 12 phone call that decides Clyde's fate.
After the credits
Finishing Story Mode and unlocking the True Ending opens endless mode, which runs for unlimited nights and stops only when every player is dead. It is also where post-launch content has been landing: the September 1 update added 30 customers to both modes, security cameras on the computer, a buyable store pet, and customer patience. Endless Mode has no endings of its own, only a last night.
What is still unknown
- The Endings page's first three screens have placeholder captions, so no official ending names exist beyond True Ending.
- Requirement pages for Grave Decision and Empty Home are stubs. Whether either has extra conditions beyond the final choice is not confirmed yet.
- The exact shift on which the missed-payment reset can fire is not documented.
- No source in this research states an ending count change after launch, so four is current as of the September 1, 2026 update.
Sources and last check
Checked on 2026-09-03. The ending count, the four ending screens, and the reset screen text come from the Shift At Midnight Fandom Endings page; the True Ending requirements (no call to Clyde after shift 12, 250 dollars of shared revenue, paying for the pet's surgery) and its closing scene come from that wiki's True Ending page; the achievement names and descriptions come from its Achievements page; the 13-shift structure and the Endless Mode unlock come from its Story Mode page; Clyde's determinant death and the Dentist doppelganger's victim list come from the relevant character pages; and the Hunt rules come from its Hunt page. All of that is community-written, not official, and several of those pages are stubs.
Three facts come from Bun Muen's official Steam announcements and outrank the wiki where they conflict: the July 10, 2026 release-date post describing Story Mode as 13 nights with a handful of endings, the August 20, 2026 update that equalized product prices to make the True Ending less random, and the September 1, 2026 update adding the Chainsaw requirement to Locked And Loaded. The claim that Empty Home and True Ending are among the rarest achievements is community opinion, not a Steam statistic.
