Shift At Midnight Doppelgangers: Every Ganger & Its Tells

Updated 2026-09-03 · Steam Shift At Midnight

Doppelgangers, or "gangers", are the creatures that walk into the Midnight Mart wearing a real person's face, and every one of them carries at least one detail that does not match the N.E.T. record. According to the community wiki, shift at midnight doppelgangers are beings of unknown origin — possibly born out of fear and other dark emotions — that have spread through the human population, which is why the Non-human Eradication Taskforce photographs everyone and files them in a database you can query at the register. The store computer, the customer's ID card, their answers, and later the Anomaly Lens and Emotiscope are the four places a ganger slips up. Below is every named doppelganger documented so far and the specific slip each one makes.

What a doppelganger actually is

The community wiki describes gangers as impostors of unknown origin that spread among people worldwide, prompting special organisations to hunt them. In-game that organisation is N.E.T., the Non-human Eradication Taskforce. N.E.T. issues identification cards, takes people's photos without asking, and writes distinguishing notes into the database — the same notes you throw back at a customer to see whether they flinch. Several customers grumble that this surveillance is invasive, which is a nice bit of world-building and also the reason your job exists at all.

The developer's own store text frames the loop plainly: work out whether a customer is a doppelganger by examining the ID, cross-checking details on the computer, and watching how they behave. Get it wrong and, per the community wiki, an unkilled ganger goes and alerts the Entity, which then comes to the store at the end of your shift.

Two things worth keeping straight:

  • A doppelganger's database entry is the real human's entry. The record is honest; the creature standing at your counter is not.
  • Being a doppelganger is not fixed per character. Community wiki infoboxes mark some customers as guaranteed gangers, some as randomised, and a large group as "randomised or guaranteed" depending on the shift.

The four places a ganger gives itself away

Player-facing detection stacks up over the 13 nights of story mode. The community wiki's shift table puts the Anomaly Lens at shift 9 and the Emotiscope at shift 11, so early nights are pure interrogation work.

LayerWhat it checksTypical failure
ID cardPhoto, name, date of birthPhoto belongs to a different person; name tag misspelled
N.E.T. databaseStatus, occupation, physical notesSays flight attendant when the file says plumber; claims a living spouse who is filed as deceased

Every known doppelganger and its tell

Every row below comes from the individual doppelganger pages on the community wiki, which are player-written and in several cases still marked as stubs. Blank tells are genuinely blank on the wiki, not omissions here.

Guaranteed versus randomised

Community wiki infoboxes tag each customer's species field. Three broad groups exist:

GroupMeaningExamples
Guaranteed doppelgangerIf they appear, they are never humanBrandon Keller, Cara Hastings, Crystal Compton, Dave Buster, Dylan Pike, Elise Hart, Emilia Carter, Grace Harper, Greta Darling, Howard Elkins, Jade Sinclair, Maya Davila, Net Pongsak, Ramona Delgado, Rudnick Wex, Vivien Marrow
RandomisedRolls human or gangerAndal Khan, Aria Romero, Baron Dean, Bronte Phelps, Corey Bishop, Keith Hargreaves, Natasha Lin, Travis Dunn, Youssef Morad
Randomised or guaranteed by contextFixed on scripted nights, a coin flip otherwiseDia Nuur, Frank Park, Frankie Bell, Imani Green, Jin Seo, John Smith, Labron Knight, Misaki Ono, Molly Foster, Nico Sethi, Nolan Sterling, Odessa Moyo, Ren Takahashi, Samir Haddad, Tiana King, Tomas Vega, Tony Marconi, Trey Banks, Troy Howes, Yvonne Johnson

One curiosity the wiki flags: Dmitri Markou is described as the only customer whose species was switched to guaranteed doppelganger, and that change is noted as temporary. Treat this whole section as community-tracked and subject to patching — the developer added 15 customers on 20 August 2026 and another 30 on 1 September 2026, so the roster is still growing.

Doppelgangers that are not customers

Not every ganger queues at the register. The community wiki lists several that exist purely as threats, which overlap with the wider monsters roster.

GangerWhere it turns upNotes
Car DoppelgangerStreet beside the Midnight Mart, debuting on shift 1Baits you toward its car, then chases; it also locks your gun, and a hit costs 12 health. Its only listed weakness is getting away from it successfully
Elongated DoppelgangerAppears after the generator is restartedWears the player's shape, stretched; the wiki guesses the design nods to SCP-3008
Player's DoppelgangerCopies the playerListed as a ganger wearing your own likeness; the wiki's roster table records no database photo for it
The DentistStalks the Midnight Mart across story modeImpersonates Bill Dawson; N.E.T. broadcast material tells witnesses not to hide or look back, just run

The Dentist's victim list on the wiki includes Ryan Holt on shift 4, Vanessa McCree on shift 9, the Bathroom Guy on shift 12, and Clyde Dawson depending on your route.

Which nights the story gangers arrive

The community wiki's customer table pins a handful of doppelgangers to fixed nights in story mode.

NightDoppelgangers listed
Shift 1Nathan Calloway's, Julietta Granger's
Shift 2Brandon Keller's, guaranteed when the burnt-down-diner news article is pinned to the notice board
Shift 3Judith Calhoun's, Tommy Delgado's
Shift 3 in the demo onlyClyde Dawson's, which the wiki believes was swapped out for The Dentist's Doppelganger once the full release landed
Shift 7Louisa Mari's

Two caveats on that table. First, the wiki contradicts itself over Judith: her own doppelganger page puts her on the 3rd night, while the Shifts page's roster for that night names Tommy Delgado's ganger and never mentions her. Second, Jade Sinclair's doppelganger is tagged a guaranteed ganger but no page gives it a night, so its shift is not confirmed yet.

Later shifts stop naming gangers directly and instead unlock detection gear, so from shift 9 onward the answer comes from the Anomaly Lens rather than a fixed script. Julietta Granger's doppelganger is also listed as a possible Endless Mode encounter, which fits the developer's stated plan to keep adding customers, traps and detection methods to that mode.

If you are hunting the one customer everybody searches for by name, Norbert has his own page. For the checking routine itself, go to how to spot doppelgangers.

Sources and last check

Checked on 3 September 2026. The doppelganger roster, every tell in the tables above, the guaranteed-versus-randomised tags, the shift assignments and the Car, Elongated, Player and Dentist entries all come from the Shift At Midnight community wiki — the Doppelgangers, Customers, Shifts, N.E.T. and Car Doppelganger pages plus the individual doppelganger pages — which is written and maintained by players, not by the developer, and several of those pages are still marked incomplete. The customer counts added on 20 August and 1 September 2026 and the description of the ID-and-computer checking loop come from Bun Muen's official Steam announcements, which take priority wherever they disagree with the wiki. Where a doppelganger's tell is listed as not documented, the community wiki simply left that field empty.
