The Entity in Shift At Midnight: How to Survive It

Updated 2026-09-03 · Steam Shift At Midnight

The entity is the huge spider-like antagonist that comes to the Midnight Mart when you let a doppelganger walk out of the store. According to the community wiki, a doppelganger you fail to catch and kill goes off and alerts the entity, which then arrives after your shift ends. That arrival is the event called the Hunt: the power dies, you get one minute to board up and set traps, and then a blind, sound-hunting monster comes through your doors. The shift at midnight entity is beaten by damage, not by stealth alone.

The official store text sums the loop up in one line: make a mistake and you are forced to board up, place traps and hide. Everything below is the detail behind that sentence.

What the entity is

The community wiki describes the entity as a spider-like creature of abnormal size and lists it among the game's main antagonists. Its gallery holds two in-game murals plus a newer character design, so the art has changed at least once. Beyond that the Entity page is short: no confirmed health pool, damage numbers or origin story yet.

Two things it is not:

  • It is not the Dentist, a separate stalker that trails you through the Mart in story mode and kills by ripping jaws off. The N.E.T. broadcast telling you never to hide and just run is about the Dentist.
  • It is not the Rakes, which only appear in Endless Mode, creep out of the forest by the street, and are shot at range. See endless mode.

What triggers the Hunt

Per the community wiki's Hunt page, there are two triggers:

  1. You let at least one doppelganger check out. The ganger reports you, and the entity turns up once every customer has been served.
  2. A Blood Moon night. During a Blood Moon the Hunt happens regardless of how clean your shift was. The Blood Moon is introduced on Shift 5.

Difficulty scales with how many doppelgangers you waved through, so a night where three of them got past you is a very different fight from a night where one did. Learning the tells on how to spot doppelgangers is the real anti-entity strategy.

The 60-second countdown

StageWhat happens
Last customer leavesA few seconds later the power cuts out; lights and the computer go dark
Red lightA dim red glow fills the Mart
Countdown60 seconds on the clock to barricade doors, place traps and grab weapons
EntryThe entity usually comes through the front door, sometimes the back doors or the doors outside the toilet
BoardsWooden boards do not stop it, but breaking through slows it down and chips its health
The fightIt hunts by sound; you win by dealing enough damage that it flees

The single most important buying rule the community wiki gives: you cannot purchase items while the entity is present. Anything you want for the Hunt has to be bought before the shift ends. The 1 September patch made that a bit kinder by letting you buy three extra bear traps instead of two, and by seeding the Endless Mode storage room with two bear traps and two planks on the first shift.

It is blind, so play the sound game

The entity cannot see you. The community wiki says it navigates on in-game sound plus your voice chat, which is why proximity chat turns into a survival mechanic rather than a joke. Stay too loud for too long and it locks on, charges you, swings, and spits webbing at you.

Practical consequences:

  • Silence is a resource. A six-person lobby is louder than the three players the game was built around, which the developer flagged when 6-player lobbies arrived on 23 July.
  • Spread out. A whole team stacked in one aisle screaming is one big noise source.
  • Noisy props matter: the 23 July patch made the jack in the box louder.

To end the Hunt you have to put enough damage into the entity that it retreats, and if it brought friends, those have to die too. Survive your first one and you unlock the Still Breathing achievement.

Creatures that show up with it

CreatureThreat levelWhat the community wiki says
EntityMain threatPresent in every Hunt; blind, sound-driven, flees when damaged enough
Shrieking DollLowSmall health pool, very weak to bludgeon hits; kill one for Silenced
DementedHighFrozen while you look at it, sprints when you look away; only bear traps kill it
MarionetteHighStarts appearing during entity attacks from Shift 9, when the Anomaly Lens arrives

The exact shift each helper starts spawning on is marked with a question mark on the community wiki, so treat those as unconfirmed apart from the Marionette. The Marionette's health was lowered in the 23 July patch, which is the only official balance change to a Hunt creature so far.

The Demented deserves its own note. Weapons do nothing to it. Player-tested advice on the community wiki is to drop a bear trap in front of it while somebody keeps eyes on it, walk the other way, then break line of sight so it runs straight into the jaws. In co-op, one person stares while everyone else works. If you never bought a bear trap, there is no way to remove it and the night has to be restarted.

The Blood Moon Hunt is the hard version

On a Blood Moon night the Emergency Weapons Arsenal stays sealed until the entity is under half health. Until then you are limited to the standard Gun and your side gun, which means the opening of the fight is fought with a six-bullet pistol. The in-game excuse comes from your store manager's phone call on Shift 5: rain has fouled the mechanism that opens the arsenal, and he tells you to hide if something turns up before it unlocks.

Plan for it. Traps, melee weapons and boards are bought from the shop and items list, and the weapons category covers bear traps, landmines, stun mines, molotovs, impact grenades, explosives, the revolver, shotgun, SMG, baseball bat, sledgehammer, brick, and the chainsaw added on 1 September. That chainsaw is now required for the Locked And Loaded achievement.

Achievements tied to the entity

AchievementRequirement
Still BreathingSurvive your first Hunt
SilencedKill a Shrieking Doll
FreedKill a Demented
Last PerformanceKill a Marionette
RelentlessFinish a Hunt within 30 seconds

Half of the game's ten achievements come out of Hunt nights. The full list is on achievements.

Where it fits in the story

N.E.T. emails you during story mode about which creatures will join the entity and when a Blood Moon is due, so read them. Those emails were disabled in Endless Mode on 1 September. The 13-night structure is on shifts, how a run finishes is on endings, and the other non-doppelganger threats are on monsters. Thunderstore mods that change Hunt difficulty exist; cheat and host menus are not covered here.

Sources and last check

Checked 3 September 2026. Entity behaviour, the Hunt sequence, the countdown, entry points, blindness and voice-chat detection, the Blood Moon arsenal rule and the creature roster all come from the community-written Fandom pages for Entity, Hunt, Demented, Shifts and the achievement pages, so they are community-reported rather than official; the Demented bear-trap routine is player-tested advice from the same wiki. Official facts come from the developer's Steam announcements: the 30 NEW CUSTOMERS patch of 1 September 2026 (chainsaw, extra bear traps, Endless Mode planks and traps, disabled emails) and the 6 PLAYER LOBBIES patch of 23 July 2026 (lowered Marionette health, louder jack in the box, six-player lobbies). Where the wiki marks a spawn shift or stat unknown, this page says so.
