Is Shift At Midnight Crossplay? Steam and Xbox Status
Updated 2026-09-03 · Steam Shift At Midnight
Partly, but almost certainly not the way you want. The only crossplay developer Bun Muen has ever promised is between the Xbox console version and the Xbox PC / Game Pass version, and he said so plainly in the July 10, 2026 release-date post: Steam owners can only play with other Steam owners. So if the question "is Shift At Midnight crossplay" really means "can my Steam copy join my friend's Xbox copy", the answer as of September 3, 2026 is no, and no patch note since launch has changed that.
The game shipped on July 22, 2026 on Steam, Xbox and Xbox PC Game Pass at the same time. There is no PlayStation or Nintendo Switch version mentioned anywhere in the developer's announcements or on the Steam store page, so treat those platforms as not announced rather than "coming soon".
Crossplay support at a glance
| You are on | Can play with Steam | Can play with Xbox console | Can play with Xbox PC / Game Pass |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam (Windows) | Yes | No | No |
| Xbox console | No | Yes | Yes |
| Xbox PC app / Game Pass | No | Yes | Yes |
| PlayStation / Switch | No version announced | No version announced | No version announced |
The single sentence this whole page rests on comes from the developer, not from the community: Xbox and PC Game Pass players get crossplay with each other, and Steam players stay in the Steam pool. Nothing in the July 23, July 29, August 20 or September 1 patch notes revisits that split, so it is still the current state of the game.
Why the two versions are separated
The Steam and Xbox builds do not simply use different friend lists, they use different session systems underneath. Community modders working on lobby-size mods describe the Steam side as using Steam matchmaking lobbies on top of a Photon Fusion session, and the Xbox side as using an Xbox multiplayer session template that is fixed at three members. That is a modder's reading of the game's internals, published in mod documentation on Thunderstore, not an official technical statement, but it lines up with the developer's own "Steam plays with Steam" wording.
Practically, that means crossplay is not a toggle hiding in a menu somewhere. There is no crossplay setting, no cross-platform friend code, and no account link to enable. See mods for what the modding scene does and does not touch.
What platforms and features the Steam page lists
The Steam store data for the game lists a Windows build only. Mac and Linux are both marked unsupported, and no Steam Deck compatibility rating appears in the store data we checked, so treat Deck status as not confirmed yet rather than verified either way.
| Store listing detail | Value on 2026-09-03 |
|---|---|
| Operating systems | Windows only; Mac and Linux not supported |
| Modes listed | Single-player, Multi-player, Co-op, Online Co-op |
| Remote Play categories | Not listed on the store page |
| Steam Cloud | Listed; cloud saves for Steam were added in the August 20, 2026 patch |
| Family Sharing | Listed |
| Steam Achievements | Listed, 10 total |
| Price | 8.99 USD at the time of checking, discounted from 9.99 USD |
Because Remote Play Together is not among the listed store categories, do not plan on it as a workaround for a friend who does not own the game. Family Sharing is listed, which is a separate Steam feature and does not create crossplay of any kind.
How to actually play with friends
Online co-op is the point of the game. The store description is blunt about it: multiplayer is where it thrives, and proximity chat carries a lot of the comedy and the horror.
- Everyone buys the game on the same storefront. Steam friends need the Steam copy; Game Pass friends need the Xbox or PC Game Pass copy.
- The host creates a lobby and picks a maximum player count.
- Friends join through the Steam friends list, or through the in-game lobby selector that Thunderstore mod documentation refers to.
On lobby size, the launch build was built and marketed for three players. The day-one patch on July 23, 2026 added a six-player option to the lobby creation screen after complaints about the three-player cap, and the developer attached an unusually honest warning to it: six is outside the intended design, it gets chaotic, and it is a bad idea for a first playthrough. That warning is worth taking seriously if you are still working through the 13 nights of shifts.
A public, Steam-only server browser was promised in the pre-launch roadmap for launch or shortly after. No announcement since has confirmed it shipped, so the official browser is not confirmed yet. What does exist is a separate, fan-made thing: according to the community Fandom wiki, a modder going by corpsepuppie released a mod named Server Browser that lets you look for particular servers. That is a third-party mod, not a native feature, and it should not be mistaken for the developer's roadmap item. Either way, the promised browser was always described as Steam-only, so it would not have been a route around the platform split.
If you cannot join your friends at all
This is the most common "crossplay is broken" complaint that turns out not to be about crossplay. During launch week the developer published a workaround for players who could not join lobbies: opt into a temporary beta branch through the game's properties in the Steam library, using an access code the announcement provided, with everyone in the group opting in together. A permanent fix in the main build was the stated goal, so on a current install you should not need that branch. The same day-one patch also specifically repaired lobby creation for players in Russia.
If joining still fails, the useful checks are ordinary ones: both players on the same storefront, both fully updated, and nobody left on an old beta branch. Also worth knowing that endless-mode only unlocks after story mode is finished, so a group can end up unable to start the mode a friend expected to host.

Sources and last check
Checked on September 3, 2026. The crossplay statement itself, the platform list, the six-player lobby option and its warning, the Russia lobby fix, the launch-week join workaround, the Steam cloud-save addition and the server-browser plan all come from official Bun Muen announcements on the Shift At Midnight Steam news hub, dated July 10, July 22, July 23 and August 20, 2026. Platform support, store categories, the achievement count and the price come from the Steam store listing for the game. The description of how the Steam and Xbox sessions differ under the hood, and the mention of an in-game lobby selector, are community-written mod documentation on Thunderstore, reported by modders rather than confirmed by the developer. The fan-made Server Browser mod and its author are documented on the community Fandom wiki, which is community-written and not official; that mod is a separate thing from the browser the developer promised, and no source confirms an official in-game browser. Where community sources and patch notes could disagree, this page follows the patch notes.
